Planned Giving Information

Latest Findings:

More than half of U.S. households (57 percent or approximately 60 million households) are either participating in or are considering planned giving.

Households who give annual gifts to charity are far more likely to be using planned giving vehicles as well.

Surprisingly, in households with less than $30,000 in net worth and $20,000 in income, 27 percent reported using at least one of the planned giving vehicles.

These are among the results of the study conducted by "The Nonprofit Times" and The Social Welfare Research Institute at Boston College.

The nine vehicles, which define the working definition of planned giving are:

  1. Bequests - including a bequest to charity in a will;
  2. Life Insurance Policy of Retirement Plan - designating a charity as a beneficiary of a life insurance policy or retirement plan, such as an IRA;
  3. Charitable Gift Annuity - establishing a charitable gift annuity with a charitable organization that provides lifetime income to the donor or spouse;
  4. Charitable Trust - creating a charitable trust (including charitable remainder trust, charitable lead trust, and other fiduciary trust providing a charitable contribution);
  5. Foundation - establishing a private or family foundation;
  6. Charitable Gift Fund - establishing a charitable gift fund or a charitable gift account at a financial institution;
  7. Charitable Fund - creating a charitable fund at a community foundation or nonprofit organization, such as a donor-advised fund, designated fund, unrestricted fund, or supporting organization;
  8. Assets - donating assets (such as stock, real estate, art or a business interest) or selling such assets in a bargain sale to a charitable organization.
  9. Retained-Life-Estate - establish a retained-life-estate agreement with a charitable organization.

When considering planned gifts, please keep The ARC of Essex County in mind. If you have already included us in your plans, please let us know so that we may properly recognize you. Call the Director of Development at (973) 535-1181, Ext. 1224.
