The ARC of Essex County held its 12th Annual “Building Tomorrows” 5K Run/2 Mile Walk in Brookdale Park, Bloomfield NJ on Saturday, April 17th. Runners and walkers came out in full force - this year there were over 400 runners and walkers combined. The “Building Tomorrows” 5K Run is one of the first USATF certified events of the season. Although it is a fundraising event, the Run is also an opportunity to provide awareness to the general public of what The ARC of Essex County does and the programs and services it provides to those with developmental disabilities and their families, who live in and around Essex County.
This year, The ARC invited teams and individuals to take attend and also raise funds online – a record number of donations were received this way. Families, friends and pets all participated and enjoyed this exciting event. The morning’s activities included refreshments, music and the awarding of prizes to top finishers. TV personality Vanessa Tyler was the MC and a participant.
In addition to the runners, many other individuals were there to support The ARC of Essex County and our endeavors. Assembly John McKeon was on hand and participated in the race. Robert Laurino, Essex County Prosecutor and President of the ARC Essex Board, presented the award to the overall winner, Josh Peterson of Plymouth, Minnesota with a time of 16:12:54. Joe DiVincenzo, Essex County Administrator, was also on hand at the finish line.
There were 26 sponsors who supported The Building Tomorrows 5 K Run/2 Mile Walk. In addition, many participants helped raise money for The ARC by recruiting friends and family who pledged to support their efforts, and thus support the work that the ARC does for 1300 individuals with developmental disabilities in and around Essex County.
