Exercise and Nutrition
This club meets twice a week, two sessions per night, at the Montclair
YMCA. The goal of this club is to provide individuals with the opportunity
to get fit and healthy in an integrated and supported environment. We
monitor the progress each individual is making by tracking heart rates,
endurance, and increase in stamina. We also provide the group with
articles and lectures on healthy lifestyle choices.
We suggest that individuals sign up for alternating times during the week
so they can take advantage of the many classes at the YMCA. For example,
if you sign up for the 6:00 p.m. session on Monday, you should sign up for
the 8:00 p.m. session on Thursday. The following week should be reversed
so you would attend the 8:00 p.m. class on Monday and the 6:00 p.m. class
on Thursday. Please complete the Exercise & Nutrition Registration Form in
this packet. The cost is $10.00 per session in advance for members and
$15.00 per session in advance for non members.
Before you can begin taking classes, all medical information must be
returned to The ARC of Essex County’s main office. We will then call to
set up a meeting time. For these classes, we require individuals to be in
adequate physical health and to be able to independently function in
changing rooms. The ratio of staff is 1 to 3 participants. Anyone needing
additional supports will need to contact Heather Buccarato at
973-535-1181, ext. 1243.
Anyone who enrolls in this program MUST be brought into the YMCA by their
ride and be greeted by an Exercise and Nutrition staff member. Also,
before you can be released from the YMCA, your ride MUST come in to get
you. We are concerned for the safety of our participants and want to be
sure that everyone arrives/departs safely.
Due to the physical nature of this club, additional medical releases are
necessary. This paperwork, along with a complete fitness packet, will be
sent out to your home upon registration.
- When: Mondays and Thursdays
- Where: Montclair YMCA
- Time: 6:00 p.m. or 8:00 p.m.

New: Community Life Skills I
The Life Skills Group is a
combination of a time to socialize and a time to learn. The night will
begin with dinner. This will provide the opportunity to practice some of
the socialization skills that will be taught throughout the group
sessions. After dinner the participants will be divided into two groups, a
men’s group and a women’s group. Each group will spend about 45 minutes to
1 hour on the topic for the evening. The topics that will be covered will
be tailored to best fit the needs of those who register and could include,
among other topics, social skills, establishing and understanding
boundaries, developing relationships, and building self-esteem. The
foundation for covering these topics will be the use of the Life Horizons
programs distributed by the James Stanfield Publishing Company. Life
Horizons I and Life Horizons II are programs that were developed and
updated throughout the last 30 years. These programs are a combination of
slides and activities to help present lessons targeted at developing
attitudes and behaviors that encourage good interpersonal relationships.
In addition to using the Life Horizons programs, we will also be using
activities and materials that have been developed over the last several
years of providing this education to many individuals in our agency’s
residential programs. The instructors each have several years experience
in providing Life Skills training. We have developed a successful formula
that combines fun times together with a learning experience. This is an
excellent opportunity to meet new people, learn information that can
significantly improve quality of life, and have fun at the same time.
