Family Support & Parent Outreach

Family ServicesThe ARC of Essex County provides a wide range of support services to families in which a member has a developmental disability. Our goal is to give family members some relief from the day-to-day responsibilities of taking care of the disabled member. This free time, which can be used for shopping, cleaning, resting, recreation or anything else, is a respite offered by The ARC of Essex County at no charge.

Our programs include:

Home Assistance

Providing hands-on assistance to families who need help acquiring services for a developmentally delayed member from state or local agencies and resources.

In-Home Family Respite

Providing families with a trained worker to help care for individuals with a developmental disability.

Respite Support for Children and Adults with Autism

Providing families with financial assistance for a respite care person identified by the family and/or providing families with a specially trained worker who will care for a family member with autism.

Companionship

Providing financial support to families for respite care, so they can hire a caregiver of their choice.

After Work Program
This program provides respite care one evening a week to adults 21 and over who attend ARC Adult Day Services. The program provides transportation to a location for social and recreational activities and a light dinner.

Hotel Respite Program
This program provides individuals with a developmental disability, age 10 or older, with the opportunity to spend a weekend away from home at a regional hotel for a variety of social and recreational activities.

 

Cash Subsidy Program

The Cash Subsidy Program provides a cash allotment to be offered to families as a means to purchase an identified support for the for the individual with a disability or the family.

 

Stress Relief Program

The Stress Relief Program provides a cash subsidy to pay for respite, therapies, recreation memberships and more.


Parent-to-Parent

Parent-to-Parent is a support organization of and for parents of newborn children with Down syndrome and similar conditions. We offer support and current information by reaching out to to new parents. Our non-judgmental philosophy allows us to aid parents no matter what their concerns may be regarding their child. We share a common bond that draws parents, their families and the community together. Our services include the following:

  • Put you in touch with other parents with similar experiences.
  • Provide information to couples when they learn they are expecting a baby with a condition such as Down syndrome.
  • Supply current information and background on the condition.
  • Speak at group events
  • Alert you to specific services and programs that are available for you and your child.
