Quality Assurance & Clinical Support

The Department of Quality Assurance and Clinical Support Services implements The ARC of Essex County’s Quality of Life Survey. The survey assesses services based on quality indicators that were identified by our consumers. The survey is conducted by raters who observe individuals throughout their day and interview support staff. The goal is to provide an overall rating on indicators such as control over one’s life, contribution to one’s community, and choice in matters that affect their lives. Additionally, the department coordinates a multi-system quality assurance process for all adult services programs.

The Clinical Support Services component of the department includes behavioral support responsibility, transitional support services, and self-advocacy and consumer training.

Behavioral Support

Behavior specialists work with consumers who pose behavioral challenges. When a behavior specialist is assigned to work with an individual, assessments are completed and recommendations made that support the consumer’s individual needs.

Transitional Support

Transition planning is undertaken when individuals move between program sites. Support during this time is extremely important to ensure success for the individual moving into the new environment.

Self Advocacy and Consumer Training

Self-advocacy and consumer training fall under the same umbrella. The ARC of Essex County currently has several active self-advocacy groups that meet monthly. The topics discussed vary from meeting to meeting but always relate to how individuals express their opinions and make decisions for themselves. Conferences are held on an annual basis with guest speakers conducting workshop forums on a variety of topics relating to self-advocacy. Consumer trainings are conducted on an as-needed basis when issues arise. Providing continuing education assists in the empowerment process of supporting people with disabilities.

Life Management Respite
The Life Management Program provides comprehensive supports to both the consumer and their family, utilizing a multi-system approach. Through support needs assessments, a Life Management Plan is devised which shows the needs and types of services to be provided. These could include:

  1. Intensive support from the clinical support specialist.
  2. Functional analysis and ongoing behavioral support.
  3. Up to 22 hours of in-home respite support.
  4. Follow along by the Program Director to ensure support needs are being met
