Program overview
Our staff receives special training, including CPR and First Aid certification, and provides support 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Whenever possible, residential supervisors and assistants foster open, interactive relationships with residents’ families. Family visits on holidays, shared meals at home and consultation on individual problems are encouraged.
In all our programs, an individual’s needs, skills and interests are assessed upon arrival to enable us to provide the right amount of support. We teach and help the individuals as they participate in all the activities of daily living such as self-care, household chores, laundry and cooking. All our residential programs provide individualized care to assure that each person receives the level of assistance needed.
In addition to teaching specific skills, we also teach concepts that are necessary for independence. These include making responsible choices, learning to live with others, and learning to be an active part of a larger community. We also stress the importance of recreation, and we teach the skills necessary to select and participate in a wide variety of leisure activities. Individuals in our programs enjoy activities such as movies, dancing, concerts, plays and sporting events. In addition, most of the individuals in our homes choose to go on vacation at least once a year.
Group homes
Our group homes are located in single and double-family homes in neighborhoods throughout Essex County. Each home serves between four and eight individuals. The staffing ratio is highest in the group homes to enable the individuals to learn new skills and access new opportunities while enjoying a family-like atmosphere.
Supervised apartments
Our two supervised apartments are located within large community apartment complexes. The people who choose these programs have mastered a number of skills and are looking for the independence and privacy associated with apartment living. Yet, they appreciate the reassurance associated with the 24-hour supervision within the complex. Staff is available for training, support and assistance as the individuals go about their daily routines.
Supported living
The Supported Living Program is designed for very independent consumers. The consumers live in apartments and condominiums throughout the county. Individuals who choose this program require minimal supervision, often limited to specific needs such as health management, budgeting, relationship skills, etc. Our staff nevertheless provides whatever assistance is needed.
